Separating Hydrogen From Air: A Primer captures an unofficial history of Next Wave Festival 2016 by documenting and sharing the recommendations of its artists via a reading room, website and print publication. From YouTube clips to philosophical tomes, the project reveals the diverse thinkers, writers and artists that have invisibly informed each artist within the Festival.
As a primer for curious visitors and a resource for researchers, this project explores the fugitive nature of legacy and influence and attempts to address the scarcity of archival material faced by researchers of performative or ephemeral practices. It confounds the authority of official histories, and provides an avenue to capture anecdote, gossip, personal reflection and other forms of unofficial documentation.
Pick up a publication at any Next Wave venue, visit the Reading Room in the foyer of Arts House, or explore separatinghydrogenfromair.com online.
